Flower Garden
- Top dress pots & planters with fresh compost.
- Plant summer flowering bulbs.
- Divide herbaceous perennials.
- Sow hardy annuals directly and half-hardy annuals in cell trays under glass.
- Place supports for large perennials such as Peonies, Delphiniums etc.
- To beds and borders apply a general purpose fertiliser and mulch.
- Dead head daffodils and tulips but do not remove leaves for a further 8 weeks.
- Plant out autumn sown plants.
Fruit and Vegetables
- Prune plum and cherry trees once in leaf.
- Sow vegetables such as carrots, radish, lettuce, peas, beetroot etc.
- Sow herbs.
- Mulch.
- In the greenhouse sow aubergines, sweet peppers and cucumbers.
- Start planting out vegetable plants in mild areas.
- Plant potatoes and start earthing up when shoots show.
- Cover strawberries with a cloche to provide early fruits.
Glass House and Indoor Plants
- Prick out seedlings and pot on when big enough.
- If necessary repot house plants or top dress larger containers.
- As the weather gets milder increase ventilation.
- Take softwood tip cuttings from Fuchsias.
- Increase watering and feeding of indoor plants.
- Control aphids and other pests as they appear.
Lawns
- Apply spring lawn feed.
- Remove weeds as they appear.
- Increase mowing frequency
- For new lawns sow seed or lay turf, taking care to keep well watered till established.
Pest and Diseases
- Protect new growth from slugs and snails.
- Control aphids and caterpillars as they start appearing.
- Continue spraying roses every 10 to 14 days with a product such as Rose Clear 3.
- Keep on top of weeds.
Trees, Shrubs and Climbers
- Divide Bamboos.
- Start layering appropriate shrubs and climbers.
- Complete moving evergreens.
- Feed trees and shrubs with a balanced fertiliser.
- Mulch.
- Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering.
